On 4 and 5 October, Asian and European leaders are gathering for the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels. Wen Jiabao, Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of China, Yves Leterme, acting Belgian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, José Manuel Barroso, EC President and Lee Myung-Bak, President of the Republic of Korea They opened the Summit by addressing the global challenges.

Asian heads of State and government and EU leaders will seek to strengthen political dialogues, enhance their trade and investment relationship, expand people to people and cultural exchanges and further develop ASEM as their common strategic asset. This gathering is the occasion to prepare the G-20 meeting which will take place the next month, in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Talks will also focus on the 16th Conference of the Parties of the Climate Change Convention which will be held in a few weeks in Cancun, Mexico, to pursue the efforts started at the Copenhagen Summit of December last year.
